The opening lines of the book sum up what the story is about. “You killed me. You suck!” This is a vampire romance about Tommy and Jody, two vampires in love. The first few nights of Tommy’s existence they have to help him find something or someone to eat, and if that turns out to be a giant cat then why not? Eventually they end up looking for a minion and they find a goth girl named Abby Normal. She helps them move into a new apartment and eventually she makes sure that their love lasts forever by saving both of them from super evil vamp (Elijah). All in all I thought that it was a good book if you could get past the jumping from one character’s perspective to another, the cursing, and well, the inappropriate humor. This book is good for a few laughs.

Neverwhere
July 9th, 2009 § 0
Kaity checked this out from the library a couple of weeks ago, after I suggested she listen to Stardust, which she really liked. Neverwhere is Neil Gaiman’s first novel, based on a BBC series of the same name (available from Netflix). I’ve seen it classified as an “urban fantasy,” and it has many of the elements of Stardust. It’s a kind of faerie tale, though more in the Grimm tradition, dark, scary, and dangerous.
The main character is a regular guy leading a regular life in London; decent job, fiancee, apartment. On the way to dinner one night, an act of kindness brings his life crashing down around him, and he finds himself in London Below where magic is real and the people from London Above who “slip through the cracks” end up.
This is the first fiction I’ve read in a while (rather than listened to), probably since I finished the last Harry Potter book. It was nice to take the time to sit down and actually read a book. I’ve never really been into reading science fiction to fantasy, but I enjoyed Neverwhere, and am looking forward to reading American Gods when Kaity finishes it.
Little Wolf, Forest Detective

Little Wolf, Forest Detective was an okay book. Here is what it is about. A little wolf that works as a detective. And the name of his group is the YFDA, and a fox named Mister Twister captured a whole bunch of animals and they play Ring-a-Round-the-Rosie and lost their memory.

Little Wolf’s Book of Badness
June 25th, 2009 § 0
Little Wolf’s Book of Badness was great. It was about a little wolf who was playing a trick on his parents and he was being good so they would say, “Oh my goodness, Little Wolf is being good!” Instead they sent Little Wolf to Cunning College for Brute Beasts to see Uncle Big Bad and live with him until Little Wolf got his bad badge.

The Strongest Girl in the World and The Invisible Boy
June 24th, 2009 § 0
Magical Kids: The Strongest Girl in the World was a good book. It was about a girl who was really strong. The day she found this out was when this little boy named Billy Brand got his head stuck in the school railings and Josie Jenkins (the strongest girl) who didn’t know that she had so much strength until she bent the school railings and Billy Brand got his head unstuck.
The Invisible Boy was a good book. It was about a boy who turned invisible, and his parents went to the moon, and while they were at the moon the boy named Sam went invisible and met a creature name Sploge who put a patch on Sam. And Sam went invisible, and that book that I just told you guys about was a good book.

The Minister’s Daughter
June 23rd, 2009 § 0
For the summer reading program I read seven books to get thirty hours. One of the books I read was called The Minister’s Daughter. This book goes from 1645 to 1692 every other chapter. In 1645 we meet Nell and her grandmother who are healers. We also encounter a love affair between Grace (one of the minister’s daughters) and the blacksmith’s son. In 1692 we get the confession of Patience, Grace’s sister. As the story progresses Nell’s grandmother is charged as being a witch and eventually so is Nell. Though Nell’s kindness brings a slight twist to the story. I enjoyed this book because of the story line plus the characters are lovable (for the most part). This story also includes a spattering of fairies and a few piskies. All in all I would give this story a 4.5 out of 5.

Summer Reading
June 20th, 2009 § 0
The kids started the summer reading program right after school ended. Hannah finished hers the first weekend, reading the sixteen books required, plus another 20 for extra credit. Kaity and Brae took a little longer, having to read 30 hours to complete the teen program. Kaity finished 7 books, while Brae devoured Eclipse and got over halfway through Eldest.

Kaity, Brae and Hannah reading
This afternoon, we took the kids to library to turn in their reading programs. In addition to their freebies at local businesses, Hannah got to pick a free book, Horrible Harry and the Triple Revenge, Brae got some free coupons at McDonalds, and Kaity traded her Redbox coupons in for the latest Artemis Fowl book.

We’re treating the kids to dinner at Quiznos and dessert at Coldstone, two places we don’t normally frequent, but the kids have earned it. Best of all, they’re all still reading.

Pulling Strings with Puppet

The content was worth suffering through the poor grammar and sometimes difficult to follow examples. The knowledge garnered from this text was enough to make the online (and up-to-date) documentation make sense. This tool is absolutely invaluable to my line of work, an I truly don’t know how I lived without it.
Great tool. Mediocre treatment of the material in this book. But, it was the only way I could get enough background for the online documentation to make sense.
